Regular Language Courses
English for Academic Purposes is taught in the students' first year at HKBU. The objective is to help students to develop the language skills necessary for specific academic disciplines. Although there is an essential core and a common set of objectives in teaching English for Academic Purposes, each course has its own objectives, methodology, content selection and evaluation procedure. This is due to differences in the nature of different academic disciplines and the demands made on students by their respective departments.
Similarly, our Chinese programmes also cater to the needs of the various disciplines. They draw on a variety of modules such as basic knowledge of modern Chinese, general writing, writing in the workplace, and simplified Chinese characters. Putonghua subjects are also offered from the beginning through intermediate to advanced levels to help students play a more effective role in the larger Chinese community.
In keeping with the cosmopolitan character of Hong Kong and its international enterprises, the Language Centre offers an increasing number of foreign language courses, which now include French, German, Spanish and Japanese.
Language Enhancement Programme
The Language Enhancement Programme aims to help students to improve various language skills according to their individual interests and needs. The Programme comprises five sections: English Proficiency Course, Writing Enhancement Service, Interactive Putonghua, Multimedia Self Access Language Learning and Supplementary Language Subjects.
The English Proficiency Course is designed to help year-1 students with lower English scores improve their basic proficiency in English. It involves one hour of tutorial meeting per week supplemented by self-study during the semester, and lasts for one to two semesters.
On a group or individual basis, the Writing Enhancement Service helps students, particularly in the second and final years, improve their writing skills.
Learners of Putonghua can make use of "Interactive Putonghua", a computerised programme, in the Putonghua Computer Room. They can progress at their own pace.
The Language Centre offers a wide range of facilities for self-access language learning in its new Multimedia Laboratory, as well as in the Multimedia Learning Centre in the Au Shue Hung Memorial Library. All students are welcome to use these facilities, and to seek assistance from Language Centre teachers in learning languages.
The Supplementary Language Subjects offer students opportunities for improving their English, Chinese, Putonghua and learning foreign languages. The subjects are non-credit bearing and enrollment is on a voluntary basis. Certificates are given to students who pass their final tests in Putonghua subjects.
