 The courses offered by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature not only help students to gain sound knowledge in Chinese literature, linguistics and culture, but also emphasize training in critical thinking and research methodology. Subjects on important works in Chinese translation of Western literature and Western literary theories are also offered. The Department cultivates the graduates to be knowledgeable in Chinese language, literature and culture with an independent mind and a broad vision.
The Department pays great attention not only to quality teaching, but also to academic activities and research. On a regular basis, the Department organizes international conferences, invites well-known visiting scholars to give speeches, publishes the book series Literature and Religion, and co-sponsors the refereed journal Sino-Humanitas.
 The objectives of the BA (Hons) in Chinese Language and Literature Course are:
- To provide students with an all-round syllabus in Chinese studies, with a balanced emphasis on language, literature and intellectual thought; and
- To cultivate students' ability in literary creation, in teaching and other related cultural work.
This emphasis is important as most graduates of the course enter the profession of teaching, while others join cultural fields such as the mass media and translation. For those who pursue graduate studies or engage in literary creation in their free time, the above foundation is equally important.
