   B.A. (Hons) in Humanities
Academic Opportunities

Humanities students at Baptist University will receive a broad, liberal arts education. They will study with a diverse group of teachers whose specialties include philosophy, western literature, Chinese literature, comparative literature, history, communication, cultural and gender studies, language, and writing.

Academically speaking, we are looking for adventurous students who want to expand their knowledge and intellectual horizons by studying several academic disciplines simultaneously. The overall aim of the course is to produce bilingual and culturally adept graduates who are prepared to enter many professions and are equally prepared to participate in the social and cultural affairs of our time and place.

All Humanities students will participate in the Humanities Core Subjects, a sequence of TEN interdisciplinary, cross-cultural subjects. Many of these subjects are team-taught and/or bilingual.

In Year I, students will also choose a Concentration. A Concentration is an eight-subject sequence offered in a single discipline by a single department. At present, students may choose a Concentration in English Studies, Chinese, History, Religion and Philosophy, Communication Arts, Film Arts, Visual Arts, and Creative and Professional Writing.

Extracurricular Activities

The Humanities Staff and the Student Society plan numerous cultural activities every term. We also invite guest speakers - artists and scholars - to address to students. Besides attending performances in the main arts venues in Hong Kong, the Programme has established a regular cultural affairs calendar to present films and other programmes on campus.

In addition, the Programme sponsors an annual Summer Study Tour to Tsinghua University in Beijing. This visit allows our students to study with Chinese scholars, meet Chinese students, explore the many historical and cultural sites in the Beijing area, and to practice their Putonghua skills.

After Graduation

All students must be concerned with life after University. Many students are so concerned with the future that they choose a career even before finishing Form 5, choose a vocational university course leading to that career, and then find themselves trapped in a career they do not enjoy.

Humanities is NOT a vocational course. It does not provide special job training.

Humanities aims to provide a liberal education, an education that trains people to think, write, speak, solve problems, sympathize with humanity and appreciate life. The Humanities teaches skills applied to many professions and to living a full life as well.

Our graduates have become writers, teachers, business executives, government officers, editors, media specialists, personnel officers, journalists, public relations officers.

If the Humanities Programme sounds interesting to you, you should also ask yourself questions about your future: As I mature and gain more experience and knowledge, what sorts of careers might I explore? What sorts of professions employ people with a liberal education? Am I interested in pursuing an advanced degree in any of the Humanities fields? What kind of life am I leading to? If you enjoy answering such questions by exploring many possibilities, the Humanities may be a good home for you.
