   B.A. (Hons) in Music    
The B.A. (Hons.) in Music provides graduates with a practical and intellectual foundation for careers in music or music related fields. The course is designed to enable our graduates to work intelligently and creatively towards their own areas of special interest. These lead to 3rd Year Honours Projects in performance, music education, composition, or an extended thesis on a music-related topic.
 
Students accepted to the course study with specialist scholars and teachers in music theory, composition, Chinese and Western music history, analysis, music education and performance. Individuals have the opportunity to hear and interact with outstanding scholars and performers from China and the Western World. The strong emphasis on solo, chamber, and ensemble performance throughout the three years provides a rich experience in practical music making. The program also places a special emphasis on the role of technology and computers in various aspects music, providing students with cutting edge equipment and facilities. These include the vast electronic instruments and recording technology available in the Electro-Acoustic Music Centre and other facilities on campus.
 
In past years, Hong Kong Baptist University ensembles have performed extensively outside of Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Baptist University Girls' Choir has had tours to Korea, Singapore, Canada, Taiwan, Malaysia, the United States and Russia. The Hong Kong Baptist University Choir has performed in Switzerland and Austria. Performance is considered an important part of a musical education at Baptist University.
 
Recent graduates have begun careers in teaching, arts management, radio and television production, and other music-related fields. Other graduates have continued their studies in graduate schools in Hong Kong, the USA, and Europe.
 
A summary of the subject sequence is outlined below:
 
Level 1
History of Western and Chinese Music, Materials and Structures of Music, Individual and Ensemble Performance, English Language, Religion and Philosophy, and Computer Literacy.
 
Level 2
History of Western and Chinese Music, Techniques of Twentieth Century Composition, Recording Techniques, Individual and Ensemble Performance, Analysis, Electives, and the beginning of some specialization in composition, performance, music education or other areas of academic interest which lead toward the Honours Project and the independent work of Year III.
 
Level 3
History of Western Music, Analysis, Individual and Ensemble Performance, and continued work in an area of specialization with subjects taken from: Specialized Performance Study, Repertoire, Electronic Music, Composition, Music Education, Conducting, Special Topics in Music (Western or Chinese) and the Honours Project.
 
The Department of Music has thirteen full-time and four part-time teaching staff supported by forty-one adjunct performance teachers. All staff are committed to helping individual students reach a high level of musical and intellectual development.
