The English Language and Literature
Programme balances the study of the
English Language and Literature written in English. The Programme
enhances students' English proficiency and communication skills, and
strengthens their bilingual and bicultural competence, allowing them to
study language and cultural issues from a global perspective.
Students may concentrate their study on one of these three areas in
their second and third years of study:
Literature-in-Depth
Language-in-Depth
Stylistics and Comparative Literature
The Literature-in-Depth Concentration provides students with a strong foundation in literature. Students will study how fiction, drama, poetry have developed through time. By reading masterpieces of literature written in English, students become familiar with foreign values and tradition as well as the universal issues shared by people worldwide. In the process, students also develop their analytical and problem-solving skills and learn the subtleties of English writings.
The Language-in-Depth Concentration provides students with an understanding of the structure of language, in particular the English language, and how language functions when people speak or write. It challenges students not to take language for granted, but to understand and appreciate what they know implicitly and sub-consciously. Consequently, they can develop a mastery of English through explicit design and informed choices.
The Stylistics and Comparative Literature Concentration allows students to study the interrelations of different literatures, especially Chinese and Western literatures. The stylistics component enables students to analyse literature through its language use. Students will also be introduced to various critical approaches to the study of literature and they will be encouraged to take a global approach to cross-cultural issues.
